Nitrogen Gas Spring Guide: Types, Applications and Advantages for Metal Stamping Dies

Introduction

In many industrial applications, nitrogen gas springs are a cost-effective and space-saving alternative to traditional metal coil springs.

Compared with conventional mechanical springs, nitrogen gas springs provide instant and relatively stable force throughout the entire stroke length. They are highly durable and do not gradually lose force due to metal fatigue over time.

Nitrogen gas springs operate by using compressed nitrogen gas inside a sealed cylinder. When nitrogen gas is compressed, energy is stored inside the cylinder. When external pressure is released, the piston rod is pushed outward by the expanding gas.

A small amount of lubricating oil is also sealed inside the cylinder to ensure smooth piston movement in both compression and return directions.

Stroke:10mm - 125mm
Maximum Stroke Frequency:20-80 cycles/min (at 20℃)
Main Features
1. Extremely Compact Design with High Force Output
The BKC series provides high force output in a very small body size. When mold designers face strict limitations in both vertical height space and radial installation space, the BKC series becomes an ideal solution.
2. International Compatibility
BKC nitrogen gas springs are interchangeable with similar international products.
Compatible brands include:
·Kaller X / GX  、Dadco U、Hyson T3 / T3T、Misumi GSV
3. Easy Installation
BKC nitrogen gas springs are normally used independently and can be installed quickly without complicated assembly procedures.
4. Alternative to ISO Standard Gas Springs
For applications where long stroke length is not required, BKC provides performance comparable to ISO standard nitrogen gas springs.

The BKH series is designed with an ultra-small cylinder diameter while providing high output force.
It is especially suitable for molds where radial space is extremely limited.
Technical Specifications:
Force Range:470KGF - 18300KGF
Stroke:6mm - 50mm
Maximum Stroke Frequency:50 cycles/min (at 20℃)
Main Features
1. Small Diameter with Powerful Force
The BKH series uses piston sealing technology and provides extremely high force output in a compact structure.
It is the preferred choice for mold designers requiring maximum force in limited installation space.
2. International Replacement Compatibility
Compatible brands include:
·Kaller CU4、DADCO SC、Hyson T2SC、Quiri RGC
3. Flexible Installation Options
BKH nitrogen gas springs can be used independently or connected into a nitrogen gas spring system with additional mounting bases.

Nitrogen Gas Springs in Metal Stamping Dies
One of the most important applications of nitrogen gas springs is metal stamping.
Special nitrogen die springs are installed between die plates to provide controlled force during opening and closing operations.
Compared with coil springs, nitrogen gas springs provide:
·Constant force output
·Better die clearance control
·Improved stamping accuracy
·Reduced material deformation
For modern high-speed stamping production, nitrogen gas springs are an efficient and reliable solution.

2. Reduce Mold Cost

Nitrogen gas springs provide:

·Compact size

·High force output

·Constant pressure

·Long service life

Benefits:

·Save mold installation space

·Reduce the number of springs required

·Reduce maintenance frequency

·Lower total mold cost

3. Safety and Reliability

Safety is a key design consideration.

BBK-JINGBA nitrogen gas springs include:

·Safety pressure relief structures

Nitrogen Gas Spring vs Coil Spring Advantages

Higher Force in Smaller Space

A compact:

·BKH50.0-025-135 nitrogen gas spring

can replace approximately:

14 heavy-duty coil springs

Equivalent comparison:

·Cylinder diameter: 75mm

·Stroke: 25mm

Space Saving Advantages

Installation Area

Nitrogen gas spring:

44.16 cm²

Coil springs:

247.75 cm²

Space saving:

Nearly 6 times smaller.

Lower Installation Height

Nitrogen gas spring:

135mm

Coil spring:

280mm

Reduced Installation Space

Nitrogen gas spring:

596.16 cm²

Coil spring system:

7963 cm²

Compared with installing 14 coil springs, one nitrogen gas spring does not require:

Pre-compression

Additional guiding

Positioning operations

Balanced Force Control System

When multiple nitrogen gas springs are connected through a piping system, all springs maintain the same internal gas pressure.

This creates balanced force distribution.

Compared with coil springs, nitrogen systems provide:

Benefits:

1、Equal force at every contact point

2、Adjustable spring force according to production requirements

3、Real-time pressure monitoring

4、Reduced mold maintenance and downtime

5、Longer service life of punches and tooling components

Adjustable Pressure

The initial force of nitrogen gas springs can be adjusted by changing internal nitrogen pressure.

For connected systems, pressure adjustment can be achieved through control panels.

Maximum operating pressure:

150 bar

Unlike coil springs, nitrogen gas springs provide adjustable force control.

Conclusion

Nitrogen gas springs provide a modern solution for metal stamping dies, injection molds and industrial tooling applications.

Compared with traditional coil springs, they offer:

·Higher force density

·Smaller installation space

·Longer service life

·Adjustable pressure

·Better safety

·Improved production efficiency
